Unlike northern Norway, the Sunnmøre Alps are never plunged into polar night. At the darkest time of the year, there's enough sunshine to ski from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.
Each winter season has its own very different atmosphere, but each is just as interesting and rich to experience.
Early winter, from December to the end of February, is a time of pastel and argentic light. The interplay of sun and shadow gives the fjords a special majesty. There are very few tour operators at this time of year, and it's the ideal time to set foot in the vastness of the ancient glacial valleys. It's not unusual to be alone on the snow-covered slopes.
From March to the end of May, the sun climbs higher and higher, and the longer days make it possible to plan major outings. The light conditions are similar to those of southern Europe, giving the fjord a completely different color from that of the early season. Snow cover normally remains very generous at lower altitudes until the end of April.
LOCATION AND ACCOMMODATION
STRANDA
Your base camp will be in the small town of Stranda, nestled along the Storfjorden fjord. Stranda is particularly well placed, in the heart of the Sunnmøre Alps. The surrounding mountains offer a variety of slopes and orientations to suit the snow and weather conditions, as well as the wishes and abilities of the group. Stranda also has its own ski resort, with panoramic views over the fjord, which can be an interesting off-piste gravity alternative in difficult weather conditions or as part of a day off.
Accommodation: you will be staying either in a Lodge or in a Hotel.
Our lodges are cosy and comfortable, with plenty of space. We've selected accommodations in Stranda, where we live, to give you a breathtaking view of nature, the mountains and the fjord. In the evenings, meals are prepared by our chef, who will introduce you to tasty, authentic Norwegian cuisine.
Stranda has a single hotel right in the center of town. This hotel offers all the comforts you need for a pleasant stay: ski room, bar area with fireplace, restaurant and swimming pool heated to 30°C, so you can relax after a day in the great outdoors.
